Group 492 was a private Canadian research organization led by Doctor Jonathan Smith. The group specialized in harnessing the potential medical applications and benefits of Element X research for the world, working closely with Unit 14 prior to the worldwide zombie outbreaks, which led to the termination of their partnership.
Eventually, Group 492 was targeted by their former partners, resulting in much of the group's destruction. Now working with Umbra Ops, the remaining assets of Group 492 worked with them to take down Unit 14 entirely, though the death of Smith ultimately led to Group 492's disbandment.

Origins[]
Group 492 was formed under the leadership of Doctor Jonathan Smith sometime during Unit 14's rise in prominence with their recent success in Element X research. During this time, Group 492 began collaborating with Unit 14 in helping with their research, though unlike Unit 14's main goal to weaponize the element, Group 492 sought to use its potential in medical applications. When it came to light of Unit 14's true ambitions, Group 492 broke away from Unit 14, intending to continue their own Element X research in private at their remote base on Meighen Island.
Second Chance[]
In 2035, following the fallout of Unit 14's plans, the Unit 14 Leader sought support from Group 492 due to their prior connections to Unit 14. However, Smith refused to cooperate, wishing to keep Group 492's work separate and pure from Unit 14 and their corruption while revealing he planned on devising a cure for Element X-related infections and diseases. Unfortunately for Smith, the Unit 14 Leader and his forces had captured one of Smith's top scientists, hoping to use his imprisonment as leverage to force Group 492 into an alliance to continue work on Element X research together. When Smith still refused to work with Unit 14, the Unit 14 Leader unleashed a zombie horde onto Group 492's base to further pressure Smith.
Desperate, Smith made contact with Umbra Ops, desiring their help to save him from his overrun facility in exchange for helping them hunt down the Unit 14 Leader. Umbra Ops agreed to Smith's request, and promptly launched an operation to extract him and whatever research and scientists they could from the overrun base. Despite the success of Umbra Ops' mission, much of Group 492's work was in ruin as a result of the zombie attack. Nonetheless, Group 492 continued to support Umbra Ops in their hunt for the Unit 14 Leader, providing information to them regarding a Unit 14 testing platform in the Laccadive Sea. From raiding the platform, Umbra Ops learned the whereabouts of Group 492's captured scientist and the location of a Unit 14 relay station in the Arakan Range in Myanmar.
While Umbra Ops ensured the extraction of the Group 492 scientist from Rajgad Gulag, Smith provided support to SEAL Team Five as they moved to infiltrate the Unit 14 relay station, the last known whereabouts of the Unit 14 Leader. However, Smith and the SEALs soon realized they were walking into a Unit 14 trap, resulting in an ambush that led to the termination of the SEAL team and Smith's execution by the hands of the Unit 14 Leader himself. Smith would have the last laugh against the Unit 14 Leader however, as his helmet cam allowed Umbra Ops to identify the Unit 14 Leader through facial recognition, allowing them to pinpoint Unit 14's last stronghold in Dubai by tracking the leader. Soon after, Umbra Ops assaulted the stronghold, eliminating the Unit 14 Leader and ending Unit 14 in Earth-92116.
As a result of Smith's death and the destruction of most of Group 492's assets, the group itself was soon disbanded, with its surviving members and work being inherited by other research companies in the world. Group 492's former work would ultimately be used to help repair and heal the world, having successfully refined Element X to benefit their main goal.
