Doctor Jonathan Smith was the leader of Group 492. He was an ally to Umbra Ops during their efforts to eliminate the last of Unit 14, though he met his end by the hands of the Unit 14 Leader himself during an infiltration of Unit 14's relay station.
Biography[]
Early Life[]
Jonathan Smith was born in 1975 in Canada. Smith served as a medic in the Canadian Armed Forces, and later left to become a scientist after completing his second tour, establishing his own research group, Group 492.[1]
Group 492[]
Unit 14 Partnership[]
During his organization's founding years, Smith worked with Unit 14 scientists to expand their Element X research, with Group 492 taking an interest in the medical applications of the substance for both public and military use. After cutting ties with Unit 14 following the discovery of their criminal activities, Smith and his company continued their own Element X work in private at their research base on Meighen Island.[1]
Pressured by Unit 14[]
In 2035, Smith and his operations were uncovered by the Unit 14 Leader himself, who sought to rekindle Unit 14's alliance with Group 492 to further their work. However, Smith refused to reform the alliance, mainly due in part to Unit 14's global destruction they wrought with the zombie outbreaks and nuclear power plant detonations.
Undeterred by Smith's response, the Unit 14 Leader decided to instead force Group 492 to support them, first by capturing one of the group's top scientists and locking him away in a remote gulag. When Smith still refused to crack, the Unit 14 Leader decided to unleash a small zombie outbreak at Group 492's base on Meighan Island, putting Smith under further pressure.[1]
Assisting Umbra Ops[]
Instead of giving in to Unit 14, Smith made contact with Umbra Ops, informing them of potential information he can give them regarding Unit 14 should they extract him and any remaining research and scientists of his from the overrun outpost. Umbra Ops agreed to Smith's proposition and subsequently launched an operation to extract Smith and whatever Group 492 assets they could. The mission would be greatly successful, as Smith was extracted with a good portion of his research and other survivors.
Soon after, Smith was able to provide Umbra Ops with information regarding the whereabouts of his captured top scientist, in addition to a Unit 14-owned platform Group 492 was aware of in the Laccadive Sea. From information retrieved by Umbra Ops from the platform, Smith uncovered that a Unit 14 relay station that sent out private broadcasts to Unit 14 bases around the world was located in the Arakan Range in Myanmar.[1]
Mission in the Arakan Range[]
As his knowledge could be useful in deciphering Unit 14 data at the facility to potentially identify the location of the Unit 14 Leader, Smith, along with a team of SEALs from SEAL Team Five, infiltrated the relay station while Umbra Ops finished their mission to extract the Group 492 scientist from Rajgad Gulag.
During the operation, it was discovered that Smith and the SEALs had stumbled into a trap set up by Unit 14, who anticipated an attack on the relay station following the destruction of the platform. In the ensuing ambush, the SEALs were killed while Smith was mortally wounded.
Smith soon found himself being confronted personally by the Unit 14 Leader. Smith remarked that the Unit 14 Leader couldn't go far now, revealing his helmet cam that was broadcasting live to Umbra Ops. The leader merely chuckled at this, taunting Umbra Ops to try and kill him now that they know who he was before executing Smith with a shot to the head with his .44 Magnum.[1]
Legacy[]
Smith would soon be avenged by Umbra Ops, who successfully tracked down the Unit 14 Leader to the last Unit 14 stronghold in Dubai and killed him, destroying the last of Unit 14. Smith's research on refining Element X for medical usage would ultimately be successful after the remnants of Group 492's members and resources were enlisted help repair and heal the world, thus fulfilling his main goal.[1]
Abilities[]
- Master Scientist: To be added
Facilities[]
- Group 492 Outpost: Smith operated his group out of a remote outpost on Meighan Island in Northern Canada, which he hoped was far out of Unit 14's reach. Unfortnuately, Unit 14 ultimately found out about the base and later destroyed it through a zombie outbreak when Smith refused to cooperate with them.
