Station Eleven: Remembrance[]
So... you wish to hear a story, my child? I have many to tell... some recent, some... lifetimes ago.
How about... the one that started it all?
A man, whose name was unknown to most aside from his alias of Roach, stands alone in his personal study, standing in front of a whiteboard with many notes on his theories on achieving temporal voyage. Among the things on the board is a couple of sticky notes, displaying records of an ancient artifact that was detailed on a stone found within the vast California desert. Turning away from the board, Roach walks up to an unfinished device he was working on in the corner of the room, and begins to tweak some parts based on his notes before someone begins knocking on his door. Roach invites the person in, and whom enters is his second-in-command Chris Bennett. Chris tells Roach that he had brought the last parts he requested, sourced by his younger brother O'Ryan and his best friend Tyler "TJ" Jackson. The device Roach is working on catches Chris' attention, who remarks that it had been awhile since he last saw it. Roach chuckles, saying it was near completion before gesturing for the parts Chris was holding.
After being handed the parts, Roach begins to explain to Chris that the device would be completed soon, and that he was to reveal it to the rest of the staff at the facility in the coming week. Chris asks if he would have it completely tested by then, though Roach reveals that he had already achieved some small tests while the device was still in development, though the specimens he had sent through time never returned. Unbeknownst to the two, a man was listening in on their conversation, taking notes on what he was hearing. Upon installing the last parts, the lights on the device turn on, signifying its completion. As the two men stare at the completed device, Chris asks Roach how the device would enable temporal voyage, though Roach remarks that he will see at the unveiling before dismissing Chris to tell their supervisors while he calibrated a few things. The man eavesdropping on their conversation soon takes his leave just before Chris exits and closes Roach's door, leaving Roach to himself. His joy soon turns to an aiming stare, and he soon turns off his device before beginning work on an unfinished pad nearby.
The following week, Roach assembles the rest of Division One to unveil his device to the rest of the facility in the open parking lot. In his speech, Roach explains that he intents to use the device to venture through time itself and learn the origins of the artifact he based his research off of, though he would need more time to finalize the device to prevent anything bad from happening to its occupants. As he spoke, the man that eavesdropped on his conversation with Chris earlier stood afar, holding a flare gun in one hand and a bloody knife in the other. Raising the flare gun in the air, the man fires a shot, causing everyone to draw their attention to it. Suddenly, TJ takes note of a strange whirring noise, and upon asking what it could be, soon finds the answer to his question as a rogue Russian PMC begins to surround the facility in small attack helicopters and armored vehicles.
The facility's alarm soon triggers, causing a mass panic in the crowd as the armed men began murdering soldiers and scientists at the facility. Both soldiers and scientists themselves, Division One begin to fight back with concealed weapons, though they remain heavily outnumbered without their reserve forces, which were still in the process of being deployed from a nearby base. With very little options, Roach orders his group into the device, and proceeds to lock themselves inside, shielding themselves with the device's bulletproof armoring. As a soldier is shot dead outside, his body falls onto the exterior control panel of the device, causing the device to suddenly turn on without warning. Roach attempts to open the door, though the door had become jammed shut, thus leaving them to the mercy of the device. As the four let out an agonizing scream, the four are promptly dematerialized and forced through the ages, blacking out in the process.
O'Ryan is the first to come to, and immediately awakens the others. Upon regaining their senses, they soon discover that they were still inside the device, though it was now in a dark room with a bunch of wooden crates. Roach turns on his flashlight and scans the room, wondering where they could have possibly ended up. Opening some of the crates, Roach is immediately shocked with his discovery; the artifact of his research, the Summoning Key, was within a crate. Taking it, Roach shows Chris, who is dumbfounded by this and questions where it could have possibly came from. The others soon resume to frantically ask where they were, though Roach shushes them as the sound of voices could be heard above them. Stowing away the Summoning Key in his satchel, Roach turns back to the device and tries to reactivate it, though it was completely burned out of energy. An angered Roach slams on the inactive control panel, causing Chris to ask what enabled the device the ability to travel through time in the first place, as Roach did not get to reveal this at his unveiling.
Sighing, Roach is about to answer the question, but before he can, the light of another flashlight focuses on them, and a voice orders them to raise their arms up and surrender. Forced to comply, the four are soon detained and escorted out of the room, where they soon discover that they had ended up on a small cargo ship. One of the two men detaining them steps up and opens a metal door, leading the group out onto the deck of the ship in the midst of a stormy night. Being brought to the stern of the ship just a deck above the engine room, one of the men begins to interrogate the four, asking how they ended up on the ship in the first place. Roach steps up, saying that they themselves have no idea, and that they only remember being trapped in the device they were found in before being teleported away through time itself. The two soldiers laugh at the concept of them traveling through time, asking if they would really buy that cheesy answer, though TJ tries to tell them it was all true. After finishing their laugh, the soldiers raise their weapons, telling the four that once they return to land, they would be handed off to Unit 14 higher-ups for proper imprisonment and experimentation, much to the shock of the four.
The situation however is abruptly ended as the ship hits a massive wave, sending everyone on deck off their balance. Taking advantage of the situation, the four attack their captors, and in the midst of their struggle, one of the soldiers decides to pull all of the pins on the grenades on his belt, intending to end the situation by killing them all to prevent any leaks of information. However, Roach sees this and kicks the suicidal soldier back into the other before yelling to jump overboard. Just as the four jump, the grenades explode, causing the engines below to explode, resulting in a chain reaction of explosions throughout the ship that cause it to completely explode, sending debris everywhere. As the small ship sank to its watery grave, the four catch onto a piece of driftwood, and soon spot a nearby island as it gets lit up by the light of a nearby lightning bolt. Nodding to one another, the four push the board through the water, using it to reach the island. After reaching the island, the four climb a small path to the top of the island, where they catch their breath; Roach soon laments over the loss of the device and ultimately their easy way back home.
Looking around, Roach spots a man standing in the rain, and attempts to catch their attention to find out what was going on. As the man turned, Roach is immediately disgusted to find a shambling corpse instead of a man, which soon begins to walk towards them. Roach orders it to stop while raising his sidearm, though the corpse continues to approach them, changing its pace from shambling to full-out sprinting. Roach soon blasts the creature's head right off, alerting more around the entire island. As the other three stood up, TJ is horrified to realize that the creatures before them are zombies as the shrieks of zombies echo through the air to reinforce his statement. More zombies soon begin to converge onto their location, which causes Roach to merely shake his head and remark that it's been one helluva day before raising his pistol, the others following suit. Nodding again, the four soon begin to fight their way through the oddity of zombies on the island.
Fighting through the undead hordes, the four discover a locked building leading to a supposed cell block, where O'Ryan ponders if anyone in captivity was spared and could potentially tell them where they are. Searching the island for ways to gain access into the cell block, the four locate various generators powering the island; Chris suggests that they should destroy them, as it would disengage the electrical lock keeping the door shut. The others agree, and soon spread around the island to destroy the generators. Upon doing so, the power on the island is abruptly turned off, however an automated voice announces that the island's secondary power grid has been activated as the power is immediately restored. TJ asks what they should do now, though Roach soon spots a tower with a light blue light pulsing in the distance on a smaller island, theorizing that it was the source of the secondary power.
Chris asks how they could reach it, and TJ points out the two guard towers on their island, pondering if there was a sniper rifle in one of them they could use to snipe the fuse box on the tower. Commending his idea, Roach and Chris search one while O'Ryan and TJ search the other. Though the former two's tower comes up empty, the latter two find a semi-automatic sniper with one magazine left. Roach and Chris soon join the other two, and Roach comments that it was going to be one helluva shot in this weather. Spotting a flag blowing in the wind, Roach teaches TJ to time his shots once the gusts of wind died down, giving him a clear shot on the fuse box. A group of zombies soon attempt to climb the tower, though Chris and O'Ryan hold them off while Roach spots for TJ on when to shoot. Once the opening came, Roach orders TJ to fire. Firing two shots, the first misses while the second hits the fuse box head on, causing the light on the tower to fade out. Simultaneously, the power on the island cuts off again, and the lock on the door is disengaged, causing it to open.
Knowing this was their chance, the four enter the building, only to find nothing save for a metal hatch on the ground. Lifting the bar keeping it closed, the four descend down the hatch via a small ladder into a dark corridor aligned with numerous cells; at the end of the hall was another room, where the controls for the various cell doors were. As the four walked to the door, a man within a blacked out cell faintly tells them to help him; when asked who he was, the voice does not reply. Roach hands Chris his flashlight and tells him to open the cells. Complying, Chris walks over to the other room and begins to open the cells one-by-one as Roach begins to reach for his sidearm. Just as Chris opens the mysterious man's cell, the man immediately charges out and tackles Roach down onto the ground, wrestling for his pistol. TJ and O'Ryan prepare the shoot the man, but just as Chris returns to the group upon hearing the commotion, the light of his flashlight reveals the face of the man assaulting Roach: it was none other than Roach's face.
Future Roach immediately stops attacking Young Roach, who is visibly disturbed by what he was seeing; Young Roach is equally shocked as his future self helps him up, apologizing for his assault. The surprise meeting is suddenly interrupted as zombies begin to flood through the hatch; Young Roach orders the others to hold them off while he talks with his future self in the control room. Complying, the three hold their ground as Young Roach brings his future self into the control room to talk. Young Roach asks his future self to spill the beans, questioning where they were and why he was locked up in a cell, left for dead; Future Roach explains that they were at Station 11, Unit 14's primary research station just off the Californian coastline, revealing he has been prisoner on the island for five years, being subjugated to Unit 14's twisted experiments with a mysterious element known as Element X. Nervously, Young Roach asks what year this was, causing Future Roach to reveal it was the year 2031. Young Roach is immediately horrified that he has jumped forward in time fifteen years, asking how things came to be like this in the future, though Future Roach explains that his exposure to Element X has erased most of his past memories.
Young Roach soon asks what became of the others, though Future Roach explains that while he does not know the whereabouts of the future selves of Chris and TJ, he does know what became of O'Ryan's future self through eavesdropping on Unit 14 guards; Future Roach goes on to reveal that Future O'Ryan was also a prisoner at Station 11, though he was able to escape and return to the mainland, only to be apprehended by the Lost MC, a biker gang based at a small town known as Stab City within the Californian desert. Young Roach comments he's heard of them before, as Future Roach goes on to explain that the Lost MC discovered Future O'Ryan's importance to Unit 14, and that they were holding him for ransom. Suddenly, the Summoning Key's glow within Young Roach's satchel catches Future Roach's attention; Future Roach then asks why they haven't returned back to their own time yet, causing Young Roach to explain that the device they used to travel through time was lost, and that their souls were ineffective as they were now "fragmented" across time. Future Roach sighs and reminds his younger self that there was still hope for them, explaining that while their current souls couldn't be used, their future ones could, causing Young Roach to ask what he was getting at.
Future Roach explains that they must collect their future souls from each of their future selves, revealing that they can use the Summoning Key to collect their souls moments after their deaths and use them to power their backup plan back at their old facility, assuring that his captors never learned of this backup plan's existence. Young Roach is horrified by his suggestion, saying that they are technically killing themselves by doing this, though Future Roach collapses onto his knees, begging his younger self to do it, as they could create a better tomorrow for all of them by altering the past, one that would spare them all from the horrors of Unit 14. Young Roach tells his future self that the others wouldn't like this, though his future self reminds him that it was the only way, gesturing towards his younger self's holstered pistol. Young Roach sighs and takes out his pistol, apologizing for what he was about to do. Just as he pulled the trigger, the other three enter the room, revealing that they cleared out the last of the zombies. As Future Roach fell backwards dead, the other three are horrified, asking what Young Roach has done. Roach explains that it was the only way before taking out the Summoning Key and activating it, causing his future self's soul to be preserved within it. The three continue to question Roach on his actions, though Roach remains miffed, saying that he will tell them along the way before gesturing for them to leave.
As the group exited the building and back onto the surface of the island, the other three continue to question Roach once more, though Roach soon lashes out at them, saying that there are more important matters to attend to. O'Ryan questions what these matters were, to which Roach explains that they have to get back to the mainland immediately. Spotting a helicopter on a nearby testing platform close by, Roach gestures for the others to follow him. Unsure as to what he was up to, the others reluctantly comply and follow him into the waters, swimming a short distance to the platform, where Roach is able to start up the helicopter. As the storm began to clear up and the four took off in the helicopter, Chris asks where they were going; Roach merely looks towards O'Ryan, saying that they were going to save "him".
Biker's Wrath: Remembrance[]
The gleaming light of the sun soon crested over the vast Californian desert as Division One's helicopter flew overhead. O'Ryan and TJ sleep peacefully on the back seats, leaving Roach and Chris to talk in private in the cockpit. Expecting no clear answer, Chris asks Roach once again why he ultimately killed his future self in cold blood and used the Summoning Key on his corpse; this time however, Roach peered behind him to see if O'Ryan was still asleep before sighing, saying that he would have to tell him sooner or later. Turning back to the front, Roach explains that the method in which they traveled through time was unlike anything ever theorized to be possible, explaining that the device harnessed an uncertain form of temporal voyage he calls "Temporal-Soul Travel", which utilized the user's soul to travel to a point in time with another version of their soul present. Roach reveals that they are in fact 15 years in the future in the year 2031, and that their future selves are scattered to parts unknown, save for the future self of O'Ryan, whom he learned from his future self was being held captive by the Lost MC at their primary encampment in Stab City. Chris subtly interrupts, asking why they were traveling to find him in the first place instead of finding a way back home; sighing once again, Roach reveals that if they wish to return back to their original time, they must eliminate their future selves and preserve their souls in the Summoning Key.
This information disturbs Chris, who asks why they needed their future souls, asking if they still had their own souls. Roach shakes his head, saying that they do, though they are currently "fragmented" across time, explaining that when they first departed from 2016, the device extracted a piece of their souls to be left behind in their point of origin, thus allowing a sort of continuity to continue in the flow of time as if they never left the present. Roach goes on to explain that the reason why the device didn't respond back on the ship was because they could no longer use it, as they risked permanently damaging their souls if they attempted to use the device again, resulting in the device to purposefully hardlock on him to ensure he didn't risk doing this. Now seeing the problem clearer than before, Chris asks how collecting their future souls would allow them to return back to their original time; Roach explains that while their current souls are fragmented, their future souls are not, or so at least his future self told him, explaining that since they are by extension their own souls, they can use them in place of their fractured souls in order to return back to their time. Chris interjects, reminding him that the device was now at the bottom of the ocean, though Roach explains that his future self guaranteed him that his backup plan back at the Humane Labs was never found by anyone else, saying that once they collected all of their future souls, they would return to the labs, activate the backup plan, and return to their own time, where he intends to alter history in order to avert the grim future that awaits them.
At that moment, Stab City could be seen in the distance, where Chris spots several trails of smoke rising into the air. Fearing something was wrong, Roach orders Chris to wake the others and have them be ready. Before doing so, Roach tells Chris to not tell the other two of what he just revealed to him, saying he does not wish for them to bear the pain knowing what they must do to their future selves just yet. Reluctantly obliging, Chris wakes O'Ryan and TJ from their slumber, saying that they were here, though things appear to be problematic. As the chopper approached closer to the camp, TJ points out the crude wall built around it, remarking that the Lost MC must've been fortifying the place from something, something Roach explains that they might already know. Spotting an opening in the wall alongside the main road, Roach lands the chopper on an adjacent knoll. Upon landing, Roach orders the others to ready their weapons, to which the others nod in agreement. Exiting the chopper, the four walk over to the opening, where Chris points out that it wasn't just an opening, but rather an explosive breach, suggesting something blew its way into the camp.
Taking point, Roach cautiously leads the group into the camp, where he soon steps on an empty canister. Picking it up and examining the printed insignia on the side, Roach soon becomes horrified as he immediately drops the canister onto the ground. O'Ryan asks what was wrong, to which Roach explains that this was an empty Element X gas canister. Roach goes on to explain that his future self informed him that Unit 14 was experimenting with a mysterious element dubbed Element X, something that Unit 14 has seemed to have already weaponized into a chemical agent. Chris asks what the element was capable of, though Roach reveals he is unsure of its effects, though he believes that they will soon find out as the sound of shrieks filled the air. Raising their weapons, they are soon horrified to see a vast swarm of zombified bikers charging towards them. Subtly cursing to himself, Roach realizes that Element X is the catalyst that creates the undead. When asked by TJ on what they should do, Roach orders the group to hold their ground and fight, saying that they weren't leaving until they found O'Ryan's future self. Agreeing, the four soon fight their way through the swarm of undead bikers.
As the team fought their way through the camp, they soon discover a reinforced trailer at the north end of the camp. Roach knocks on the door, asking if anyone was still alive, to which responded a weakened voice with a plead for help. Attempting to open the door from the outside, it comes to light to Division One that it is locked from the inside; Chris asks the voice to open the door, though the voice explains that he cannot, as he is bound in handcuffs to a table inside. Realizing that this was O'Ryan's future self, Roach reassures the voice that they will find a way to break him out, telling him to stay calm. The four soon look around the trailer, examining what could be used to break inside of it without harming Future O'Ryan before TJ points out the various flammable tanks around the camp. This gives Chris an idea, who suggests they craft their own blowtorch to cut open a hole into the trailer.
Agreeing to the idea, the four split up around the camp to source materials to create their own blowtorch; Roach and Chris source an empty Element X canister that can be used as a small fuel tank, while TJ and O'Ryan search for a faucet or an exterior water valve to use as the torch. While Roach began to fill up the canister with propane gas, zombies began to push towards them, forcing Chris to defend him until he finished. Upon fueling the canister, the two meet up with TJ and O'Ryan, who had just acquired a water valve after ripping it off the side of a trailer. Returning to the reinforced trailer, Roach forges a blowtorch out of their sourced materials, where he soon uses it to cut open the trailer's side door. After finishing, Roach kicks down the door, and the four enter the trailer, where they find the mentally shattered future self of O'Ryan, handcuffed to the table post and on his knees crying.
Rushing to his aid, Roach uses his blowtorch to cut the chains of the handcuffs, freeing Future O'Ryan. Chris helps him up, but as the two make eye contact, Future O'Ryan screams and falls back down to the ground, fearfully crawling backwards towards the edge of the room. Confused, Young O'Ryan tells Future O'Ryan to calm down, though Future O'Ryan becomes even more bewildered upon seeing his younger self. TJ intervenes, asking Future O'Ryan to take a deep breath and relax before remarking that they've come to save him, though Roach and Chris both share a grim expression towards one another. As Future O'Ryan began to calm down, he makes eye contact with Chris again, though instead of cowering, Future O'Ryan grits his teeth, ominously repeating the word "you" towards him.
Confused, Chris asks what he was doing, though before he can finish his sentence, Future O'Ryan leaps up from the ground and tackles down Chris and attempts to choke him out. Roach and TJ intervene by restraining Future O'Ryan, while Young O'Ryan helps up his brother. Future O'Ryan asks his younger self why he still trusts his brother, asking if he forgot the cruel and inhumane things he's done to him. Young O'Ryan explains that he cannot recall any tension between him and his brother, though Future O'Ryan interrupts, rebuking his younger self on how he could possibly forget. Roach asks Future O'Ryan to stop being cryptic and explain what he was actually referring to, causing Future O'Ryan to shake his head before starting that it started roughly five years prior.
Though his memory of how things kicked off was hazy, Future O'Ryan narrates what he does remember. At Station 11, Unit 14 was conducting Element X experimentation on human test subjects in an attempt to subjugate their minds and force them to obey their every command. Among the test subjects were Future O'Ryan, Future Roach, and Future TJ, all of whom where captured by Unit 14; however, the results of the experiments stripped them of most of their past memories, leaving them mentally broken. Future O'Ryan explains that the one who was calling the shots on the experiments was none other than Future Chris, who had seemingly betrayed his former allies in exchange for working for Unit 14 as one of its prominent members. A horrified Chris explains that he would never do such a thing, especially to his own brother, though Future O'Ryan tells him that he did, saying that he gladly traded away his brother's life for money and power within Unit 14's ranks.
Continuing his story, Future O'Ryan explains that he was incarcerated with Future Roach on Station 11 for the next five years, while he lost tabs on what Unit 14 did to Future TJ. However, Future O'Ryan would begin to plot an escape with Future Roach, and though Future O'Ryan was able to escape on a dinghy during a dark and rainy night, Future Roach was once again captured. During the escape however, Unit 14 had shot the engine of Future O'Ryan's dinghy, causing it to eventually stall out, leaving Future O'Ryan to aimlessly drift across the Pacific Ocean alone. As morning rose the next day, a tired and weakened Future O'Ryan made landfall on the beaches below the Santa Monica Pier, where members of the Lost MC were having a private meeting. There, he was kidnapped by the biker gang, who brought Future O'Ryan back to their camp at Stab City for interrogation. Future O'Ryan revealed to them that he was an escaped Unit 14 test subject, though this would only worsen his situation, as the Lost MC intended to profit off of Future O'Ryan by selling him back to Unit 14 for ransom upon seeing his importance to the organization.
This would not go well for the Lost MC, as Unit 14 intended to tie up any loose ends. Immediately after being contacted by the Lost MC, Unit 14 mounted an assault on Stab City to eliminate the Lost MC, intending to prevent any leaks of Unit 14 information. During the assault, Future O'Ryan was handcuffed and locked in a trailer while the Lost MC fought against Unit 14. However, Unit 14 would utilize Chemical X, the weaponized gas version of Element X, against the Lost MC, turning them into mindless zombies. While Future O'Ryan expresses his relief on being spared from the gas, he reveals that he overheard a Unit 14 soldier contacting Future Chris on the success of the operation. Through eavesdropping, Future O'Ryan learned that Station 11 had fallen as a result of the Element X testing on the island, and that a bulk of Unit 14 had relocated to the Getty Center in Los Angeles, including Future Chris. Ending his story, Future O'Ryan explains that his one wish was to watch his brother die for his crimes, much to Young O'Ryan's dismay.
Roach explains that they'll deal with Future Chris in time, though they first have to deal with another matter before aiming his pistol towards Future O'Ryan. A horrified Young O'Ryan retaliates by aiming his pistol towards Roach, though Chris orders Young O'Ryan to stand down before raising his own pistol towards Young O'Ryan. Young O'Ryan, disbelieved by Chris siding with Roach, asks what they were trying to accomplish by murdering his future self. Roach asks Young O'Ryan if this was the future he wanted; being experimented on by Unit 14 and having the desire to kill his own brother. Chris explains that Roach knows a way to return back to their time and alter history to prevent the grim future they see before them, but for them to accomplish such a feat, they must kill their future selves and preserve their souls within the Summoning Key, as by doing so would allow them to reactivate Roach's backup plan at the Humane Labs and ultimately return home. As the tense standoff continued, Chris asks one thing from Young O'Ryan: to trust him, Tearing up, Young O'Ryan apologizes before suddenly aiming his pistol at his future self and immediately pulling the trigger before he could react.
As Future O'Ryan fell to the ground dead, Young O'Ryan, horrified by what he just did, begins to cry as he falls to his knees. Turning to Roach, Chris bitterly tells him that their plan better work for his sake before Roach steps up with the Summoning Key. Activating the artifact, the Summoning Key soon levitates from his hand and hovers over Future O'Ryan's body as it absorbs his soul before landing back in Roach's hand. As the others mourn Future O'Ryan's death, Roach solemnly tells the others that it was time to go; Chris helps up his brother as they exit the trailer while TJ follows them out, though not before gesturing a cross over his chest. Walking back to the chopper, TJ catches up with Roach, saying that he better tell them everything, though Roach reassures him that he will along the way before remarking that he might not like what was in store for him. Boarding the chopper, Chris asks where they are going now, though before he can finish his sentence, he stops, knowing who they were going for next as Roach turns towards him. As the chopper took off, O'Ryan looked one last time at Stab City as they began flying towards Los Angeles.
Museum: Remembrance[]
Summer 1997
On the beaches of the US Virgin Islands, a boy lies peacefully in a folding chair, watching as the sun began to set over the horizon, the waves of the ocean calmly sweeping nearby. The boy's peace is interrupted as his older brother arrives, who calls to his younger brother that dinner was almost ready. Taking note of the boy's seeming lack of motivation to get up, the older brother asks what was on his mind. The younger brother sighs, saying that he was growing tired of staying on the islands all his life and that he craves adventure beyond their tiny rock. The older brother chuckles, saying that that was something he too was thinking about as he sits down on the ground beside his brother's chair. The younger brother asks what he thinks exists outside of their island, though the older brother claims that it was more life, much like their island, though on a much grander scale.
The older brother continues by explaining that the ocean before them acted as a barrier; he knows something exists beyond it, but questions if the beyond knows of their own existence on the island. The younger brother, curious by his brother's words, asks how long he too has shared these thoughts; the older brother responds that he's been thinking about it nearly his whole life, much like his younger brother. Smiling, the younger brother asks what they were waiting for, saying that they should travel to the outside world by themselves immediately, to which the older brother chuckles in response. The older brother explains that once they both get a little bit older, they'll both one day venture off their rock on their own together and see just what the rest of the world is like for themselves. Continuing, the older brother explains that no matter what it was like, he would always be there to protect his younger brother. When the younger brother asks if he promises, the older brother smiles, saying he does.
Chris... CHRIS!
Chris opens his eyes to see O'Ryan shaking him awake. Disoriented, Chris looks around to see the two of them in the midst of the fiery wreckage of their chopper. As he began to regain his senses, the sound of gunfight soon became apparent as Roach and TJ were defending the crash site from a swarm of zombies. O'Ryan yells to Roach, saying that he got Chris awake. Yelling back, Roach orders him to get him up and carry him to the museum's rotunda while they provided cover. Agreeing to the order, O'Ryan holds out his hand as Chris grabs ahold of it before being hoisted up by his brother. As Chris fazed in and out of consciousness as he rested over his brother's shoulders, he watched as his allies carried him to the Getty Center's rotunda. Upon entering, Roach and TJ immediately barricade the doors with a vending machine across the way, buying them some time to recuperate. O'Ryan places Chris on the ground against a wall, who dazedly asks what happened.
TJ explains that as they drew closer to the Getty Center, an automated SAM turret owned by Unit 14 identified them as hostile due to their lack of credentials and opened fire, resulting in them crashing just outside the Getty Center. Regaining more of his senses, Chris asks what their plan was now. Roach explains that there are remnants of Unit 14 holding out within the museum, defending Chris' future self somewhere in the perimeter from the surging undead, and inevitably the four of them seeking to take his life. O'Ryan pulls out a pistol and hands it to his brother, saying that today wasn't going to end anytime soon, adding that they only have one shot to set things right. Nodding in agreement, Chris takes the pistol and pulls himself back together, saying that he intents to get some answers from his future self as he cocks his pistol ready.
While Division One began fighting the undead around the courtyard, Future Chris stood atop one of the tallest buildings in the facility, overwatching the fighting below. As he observed, a panicked Unit 14 soldier approached him, asking what to do as they couldn't hold out much longer. Future Chris calmly explains that an extraction team was on its way to collect them and what could be salvaged of their research, though he reveals the undead was the least of his concerns before gesturing for the soldier to look below. Showing the soldier the members of Division One fighting the undead, Future Chris explains that they were to be dealt with immediately, ordering the soldier to rally as many others as he could to bring the four down. Accepting the order, the soldier retreats down a staircase as Future Chris continued his observations.
However, a few zombies began to climb up the side of the building towards him; Future Chris merely grins at the sight and pulls out his pistol, eager to fight the undead himself. As he fought, Division One took note of the undead corpses falling from the roof Future Chris was on, deducing that he was up there. Locating a door that would bring the four to the roof of Future Chris' building, the four soon discover that the door was retrofitted with a special device that only accepted the DNA of any Unit 14 personnel. However, the four realize that since Chris was a member of Unit 14 in the future, his DNA could bypass the device. Agreeing, Chris placed his thumb on the scanner, where he waited for a moment for the results. After a moment, the scanner turned green, allowing the four to proceed.
Just before they could however, they were ordered to stop by a group of Unit 14 soldiers. Instead of surrendering, the four immediately turn their weapons on the soldiers, sparking a gunfight between the two factions. As each side took cover from one another, a swarm of zombies began to converge on the two groups, forcing each side to deal with the problem while fighting one another at the same time. However, while Unit 14 was distracted fighting a group of zombies directed towards them, Division One made a dash for the door, closing it behind them just before Unit 14 could fire on them again. Knowing they were short on time, the four rush through the corridor until they reached the stairwell, where they ascended the stairs until they got to the roof, where Future Chris had just finished disposing of the last of the zombies attacking him.
Not taking any risks, Young Chris shoots a round from his pistol into his future self's leg, causing him to collapse onto the ground in pain. Young Chris walks towards his future self, disgusted on what he has become. Futue Chris, recognizing his attacker, merely laughs at his younger self, berating him for his ignorance on what was to come. Enraged, Young Chris hoists his future self up off the ground, furiously questioning why he left his brother to rot away and ultimately die. Future Chris, upon hearing his brother has died, at first says nothing, but soon changes into sadistic laughter, much to Young Chris' horror. Future Chris explains O'Ryan was meaningless when it came to the future of Unit 14 and their research, saying that he was merely a loose end that was now tied. Young Chris shakes his head, saying that he knows that he truly values his brother above anything else, reminding him of the promise they made to their brothers to always be there to protect them. Future Chris chuckles, remarking that promises are usually broken.
While Young Chris interrogated his future self, he took note of his future self's eye color, which had seemingly changed from blue to indigo. Suddenly, it comes to light to Young Chris: his future self had been too exposed to Element X, driving him insane and seemingly distancing his grip on reality. Punching his future self back onto the ground, Young Chris tells him that he knows deep down he truly cares for his brother, saying that no amount of money or power could possibly change that. Future Chris explains that he was wrong in so many ways, though as Young Chris begins to punch him multiple times in succession, Future Chris begins to recall the hazed memory of the promise he made to O'Ryan. Seeing that he has begun to finally get to his future self, Young Chris continues, saying that Element X has corrupted him beyond repair; a man driven by deluded thoughts and ideals.
Future Chris, struggling to stay sane, remarks that he was more than he seemed, though Young Chris calls him a liar, saying he knows the truth. Young Chris fills his future self in on the pain and suffering endured by his brother, reprimanding him that he was the cause of all of it. Future Chris, having finally snapped, yells in despair as he grabs his discarded pistol on the ground and attempts to shoot his younger self, only to realize he never got to reload after killing the last of the zombies. In retaliation, Young Chris fires three shots from his pistol into his future self's head, killing him as he fell backwards dead; a disgruntled Chris could only stare at his future self's corpse, horrified on what he had done. Roach, having watched the whole thing with the others in the background, places his hand of Chris' shoulder, saying that he was sorry, though Chris says nothing back. Walking towards Future Chris' corpse, Roach pulls out the Summoning Key from his pouch and activates it, allowing it to preserve Future Chris' soul.
While O'Ryan and TJ watched from behind, TJ realizes something; they never got to ask Future Chris on the whereabouts of Future TJ. Just as Roach finished up, a Unit 14 attack chopper rose up into view, ordering the four to surrender. Before the group can react, the Unit 14 soldiers they fought earlier emerged from the stairwell, reinforcing the surrender order. With no other choice, Roach reluctantly orders his allies to stand down, much to their surprise. Reluctantly following suit, the other three surrender, allowing Unit 14 to restrain the group.
Junk: Remembrance[]
With Future Chris dead and the members of Division One apprehended, Unit 14 prepare a mass exodus of their forces from the country at the Los Angeles International Airport, intending to relocate their operations to an overseas facility. As the last Unit 14 convoy departs from the Getty Center, the members of Division One are kept in the back of an armored vehicle, guarded by a single soldier with them. While the soldier holds his pistol in one hand, he holds the Summoning Key in the other, inspecting the markings on the relic while Roach coldly stares at him. As the convoy passes through downtown Los Angeles, they begin to pass by a fortified junkyard, where several armed militants oversee the convoy.
One of the militants radios another group on an adjacent building, asking if they were ready; upon hearing a confirmation, the militant orders his forces to spring the trap. Just as the convoy passes alongside the junkyard, an IED is triggered, destroying the first couple of vehicles in the convoy while forcing the rest of the convoy to halt. With the convoy stopped, the militants begin fighting Unit 14 soldiers, intending to procure their cargo for themselves. Simultaneously in the back of the armored vehicle, the explosion distracts the soldier long enough for Roach to charge tackle the man, disarming him of his weapon before shooting him with it. Just as Roach reclaims the Summoning Key, two more soldiers open the back of the vehicle, though they are immediately shot dead by the militants just as they began to raise their weapons towards Division One.
Two militants soon appear to check the back of the vehicle, where they discover Division One. Roach raises his weapon, asking who they were, though Chris tells him to stand down and ease off. One of the militants radios in to another, saying that Unit 14 was transporting prisoners. The voice on the radios acknowledges, ordering the militants to bring them to him for questioning. Agreeing, the first militant tells the four that they've been given orders to bring them to their leader in exchange for answering a few questions. Roach looks around the vehicle to his comrades, who nod in agreement to the offer, before holstering his pistol and agreeing to comply. Nodding, the two militants stand guard as Division One exit the ruined vehicle, where they take note of the dilapidated city of Los Angeles around them.
The two militants proceed to escort the four into the junkyard while the rest of the militants continue their fight against Unit 14. Closing the doors behind them, Division One are escorted through the junkyard, where they discover that it was a large survivor camp for survivors of the undead scourge. O'Ryan ponders to the others on how long the undead have actually been terrorizing the future, though Roach suggests that the dilapidated state of the nearby city implied that it's been years. The group soon reach a command building in the center of the site, where they are introduced to the leader of the militants: TJ's future self. Upon seeing his younger self and his former colleagues, Future TJ is immediately shocked, and orders for the two militants to leave and patrol the site in case Unit 14 breaches. Once the militants leave, Future TJ urges the four to enter his office, saying that they have much to discuss.
Upon entering the office, Future TJ asks of the four to sit down as he walks past the group towards his chair. While Future TJ's back is turned, Roach flashes his holstered pistol towards Young TJ, reminding him of their mission. Once the four are situated, Young TJ asks his future self to tell them what he knows; what has happened in the past fifteen years. Future TJ leans back in his chair and sighs, saying that much has happened in that span of time that was worth noting. Beginning his story, Future TJ touches upon the origins of Unit 14, explaining that they began as a weapon manufacturer that developed new and experimental weaponry for private militaries and black market dealers across the globe. During this era of Unit 14's history, members of the organization came to discover a mysterious substance believed to have extraterrestrial origins, naming the substance "Element X."
Through thorough research and experimentation, Unit 14 found the key to weaponizing Element X into portable weapons of mass destruction, selling their creations to the highest bidders rich enough to buy their weapons for their own needs. From these profits, Unit 14 greatly expanded their operations, forming their own private military from within their ranks and establishing a secluded research station on a remote island in the Pacific Ocean. Around 2026, Unit 14 began to develop an interest for biological experimentation with Element X, and soon began a series of inhumane trials on captured human test subjects. One of the many projects Unit 14 conducted was titled "Project Enlightenment," a series of tests that would brainwash their subjects in an attempt to force them to surrender their free will and pledge their lives to Unit 14. It was around this time that Future TJ explained was when he was apprehended by Unit 14 along with his fellow colleagues and subjugated to these very tests.
Future TJ however was able to resist much of the tests as a result of a strong will, though he would be ultimately begin to suffer severe memory loss from the experiments, losing the memories of his life between the years 2016 and 2027. Deeming him a failure, Unit 14 decided to release Future TJ back into the world, as they believed he wouldn't be able to recall his interactions with Unit 14. Despite this however, Future TJ was able to eventually recall Unit 14's experiments, and began plotting a way to bring down Unit 14 for their crimes. Future TJ then formed a militia of his own, naming the group the Raiders, and established a base within the junkyard they are currently in, using the junkyard front as a means of hiding their operations from Unit 14. Ending the story, Future TJ explains that it was just recently that Unit 14's experiments finally backfired, resulting in the creation of an uncontrollable undead army that ravaged much of the state of California. Roach however interrupts the claim, revealing that it was no backfire, but Unit 14 having further weaponized Element X into a chemical nerve agent titled "Chemical X," explaining that the gas was an indirect byproduct of the experiments. As Roach spoke of this, members of the Raiders continued to fight Unit 14, though they are suddenly caught off guard when they began launching canisters of Chemical X into the compound.
While the remnants of Unit 14 fled from the scene, those caught in the gas were turned into zombies, beginning an outbreak within the confinements of the junkyard, forcing survivors to flee for their lives. As an alarm blared, Future TJ opened the blinds of his office window to see a zombie tackling a helpless survivor, pinning them against the window as they screamed in horror. Horrified by the sight, Future TJ orders the four to move, and leads them to an armory to stock up. While the group stocked up, Future TJ explains that he will do his best to get survivors to a nearby safehouse, telling the four to try and contain the outbreak as best as they can while looking for trapped survivors. Young TJ nods to his future self, and tells him to meet up with them once they finished, saying that there is something they have to discuss. Agreeing, Future TJ wishes the four good luck as he kicks open the exterior door, shooting a couple of zombies in the head with a shotgun. As Future TJ makes a dash for a couple of survivors about to be cornered, the four emerge from the building to face a swarm of zombies approaching them. Cocking his weapon, TJ remarks that the sensation of staring down a horde of zombies with a weapon in hand never got old, much to the amusement of O'Ryan.
The four soon began a series of search and rescue missions around the junkyard, rescuing survivors from the undead and escorting them to Future TJ's men for extraction. Shortly after rescuing a total of ten groups of survivors, the shriek of a young girl filled the air, alerting Future TJ and the four members of Division One. Future TJ rushed to the source of the shriek to find the young girl's mother having turned, intending to turn the child as well. With no other choice, Future TJ ambushes the zombified mother from behind, blasting her with his shotgun before ordering the girl to run towards his men. While Future TJ's back is turned however, he is ambushed by the young girl's zombified father, who bites Future TJ in the back of his shoulder before wrestling him down to the ground. The members of Division One arrive just in time to witness this, and retaliate by shooting the zombie dead. Young TJ rushes to his future self's side, who was now beginning to turn into a zombie.
Young TJ begins to tear up for his future self, saying that there was nothing he could do to save him. Future TJ comforts his younger self, saying that they all saved lives today, commending him and his allies for their efforts in protecting his people. After thanking his future self for his comment, Young TJ reminds him of his request earlier, and explains that they have found a way to undo Unit 14's madness, though it required them to hunt down and kill their future selves in order to extract their souls with the Summoning Key. Future TJ is initially shocked at this revelation, but comes to accept this fate, knowing that his soul would, ironically, be in his own safe hands. Future TJ then nods, saying to do what needs to be done before ultimately succumbing to the infection. Just before Future TJ could get up and attack, Young TJ immediately shoots his zombified future self in the head, ending his short-lived life as a zombie. In an act of respect, TJ kneels down and places his hand on his future self's corpse, tearfully apologizing before Roach steps up with the Summoning Key, preserving what was left of his soul.
With the chaos around them having finally subsided, Roach explains that it was time they leave, suggesting they take one of the vehicles left behind by Unit 14. As the four began to walk through the junkyard towards the main exit, Roach looks around at the remains of the once prospering camp, promising to the fallen inhabitants that they would put an end to Unit 14 once and for all. While doing this, Roach spots an unusual object poking out of the rubble, and glares towards it in suspicion.
Humane: Remembrance[]
A bolt of lightning cracks through the night sky as a Unit 14 van races down an old access road. As the rainy weather worsens, the van comes to an abrupt stop just in front of an abandoned security checkpoint; O'Ryan and TJ emerge from the back of the van as Chris and Roach get out of the front, all of whom ready their weapons. The four slowly spread out around the checkpoint, and soon discover a blood-stained chair in the booth. Roach takes out a flashlight and shines it around the checkpoint, noting the unusual damage present around it and concludes that it wasn't fresh. Just then, a moan could be heard, which causes Roach to quickly shut off his flashlight and signal the others to quietly follow him. Slowly passing through the checkpoint, the four discover the dilapidated nature of their former facility, noticing that operations seemingly continued after they departed. Suddenly, another bolt of lightning lights up the sky, revealing several zombies around them quietly approaching; Chris immediately begins to fire upon the zombies, followed by the other three as more began to appear throughout the facility grounds. After clearing the area, TJ makes a dash for the van, intending to get better weapons from the back, when suddenly another bolt of lightning strikes the checkpoint in front of him, causing the checkpoint's roof to collapse onto the rest of the structure. With the only exit now blocked, the four turn to face a fresh new horde of zombies approaching them. Reloading his weapon, Roach declares that the only way they were leaving was through his backup plan before firing a round at a zombie's head.
Traversing through the facility grounds, the four come to reach the facility's vehicle depot. There, Roach points out an emergency generator hidden behind a grate in an adjacent wall, and orders the others to cover him while he got it online. After a moment, the power and lights around the facility are restored, allowing the four to gain access into the facility's interior. TJ attempts to go in through one of the doors at the depot, though Roach stops him, saying that there was only one way to enter his lab. Roach soon leads the others to a lone building on the southeastern corner of the facility, and knocks on a wall, revealing a terminal that he soon inserts a code into. Upon entering the code, a secret door opens up, revealing an elevator. O'Ryan questions how he even got permission to build this on the facility grounds, to which Roach cheekily responds that "he knew a guy", much to O'Ryan's annoyance. The four soon enter the elevator, and Roach presses a couple buttons, causing the doors to close and for the elevator to begin its descent. During the ride, Chris asks where this would take them; Roach reveals that it would take them to a secret lab he installed behind his office, saying that he didn't want to risk having a secret entrance within his office itself. The elevator comes a stop, and the doors open, revealing a dark room. Roach walks forwards, and reaches for a light switch before flicking the switch; as the lights come on, a large teleporter is revealed on the other side of the room.
Roach explains that he had finished this teleporter right before he revealed the other one to the rest of the facility, saying that it should be already calibrated to bring them back home. TJ steps up, asking what would happen if it didn't work, though Roach assures him that it will before pulling out the Summoning Key. Placing it in a circular slot on an exterior console, Roach invites the others to enter the teleporter, saying that it wouldn't hurt them this time. As they enter, Chris asks what their plan was once they returned to their original time; Roach explains that their first objective was to repel the Unit 14 attack on their facility, as by doing so they would change a significant event in the past, thereby changing the grim future around them. Roach then presses a button inside the teleporter, which causes the door to close them in. Roach then tells the others to hold on as he presses another button, which causes the Summoning Key to surge with energy; the souls of their fallen future selves then emerge from within the artifact as a piece of them is stripped from them and stored within the device; as for the rest of their future souls, they would join with their past souls, thus restoring them whole. Roach then pulls down a lever, saying it was time for them to save the future as they are all enveloped in a bright light.
In the light however, the truth would be revealed to the four; as they ventured through, visions of their future actions would begin to flash before them. The visions would rapidly continue, piecing together events, such as Roach's mission to seal off a paradox universe culminating in the Fractured Realm's permanent creation, Division One's manhunt for a Unit 14 operative named Edward Willard, the United States' failed attempt to use Element X for themselves and the subsequent zombie outbreaks around the world, Division One's encounter with a young Mackenzie Davis, and Division One's sacrifice to remain at the Los Angeles International Airport while ensuring a handful of survivors escaped on a plane, including Mac. In the last of the visions, Division One are captured by Unit 14 and brought to Station 11, their memories stripped via the use of Element X. After being scattered across the state of California to await their fates, Roach encounters their time-traveling past selves in the cell block of Station 11, and embraces his fate as his past self shoots him in the head. As his vision goes dark, all of the visions begin to rapidly rewind, even rewinding past the events of their return to their former facility before Roach’s vision goes dark once again.
After a moment, Roach immediately opens his eyes and gasps, finding himself surrounded by the other three back at the recycling center before dropping what he was holding: an audio log made by Mac that detailed the events of what truly happens once they return to their original time. Falling to his knees, Roach screams in despair as he pounds the ground in fury while the others solemnly watch on. In his lament, Roach expresses his horror on Unit 14's manipulation of his plan to return to their own time, as well as his immense guilt for leading them to their imprisonment within a time loop. Chris crouches down and places his hand on Roach's shoulder, assuring his friend that there is still hope, reminding him that they've effectively broken the loop by learning of this information. After a moment, Roach recovers and stands up, pondering on what to do now, as they now can't take any chances with his original plan. O'Ryan glances over to the ruined Unit 14 convoy, and suggests that they look for any Unit 14 intel they could find. Agreeing to the idea, the team sweeps through the convoy, and stumble upon a wounded Unit 14 soldier pinned under debris. After releasing the soldier from the debris, Roach immediately punches him unconscious, and orders him to be brought into Future TJ's office.
Eventually, the soldier comes to, only to find himself tied up to a chair. While the other three stand off to the side, Roach walks up to the man, armed with a pipe wrench. Roach places his hand on the soldier's chin and raises his head up, ordering him to start talking. The soldier makes eye contact with Roach, and promptly spits in his face. Merely wiping his face clean of the spit, Roach responds by hitting the soldier's right knee with the pipe wrench as hard as he could. After waiting a moment for the soldier to calm down from the pain, Roach repeats his order and asks to know what Unit 14 were transporting in the convoy. Giving in to the pain, the soldier explains that they were shipping out various supplies from a Unit 14 excavation site in Douglas City that was disguised as a saw mill, which was being using as a supply station to distribute various cargo to Unit 14 bases around the world. Chris leans up and approaches the soldier, asking what was so important in that area for Unit 14 to have an excavation site. The soldier explains that Unit 14 had heard of rumors of a mythical weapon that crash-landed in the area long ago, and that they were seeking to claim the weapon, which was rumored to possess great power that could in theory be weaponized into Unit 14 armaments. TJ asks the soldier on the status of the operation to recover the weapon, though the soldier goes quiet, refusing to answer the question.
To get him to talk, Roach raises his pipe wrench and orders Chris and TJ to hold him down as he prepares another swing, much to the soldier's horror. Just as Roach swung, the soldier yells for him to stop, forcing Roach to instead strike the ground just in front of his other knee. Having broke, the soldier explains that Unit 14 discovered a hidden chamber below the dig site, though they were unable to gain access to it, as they were missing "the relic armed with the destined four", as enscribed on the chamber's door. Asking one last question, O'Ryan asks what the security package at the site was. The soldier however reveals that the site was recently abandoned, as Unit 14 were unable to contain the hordes of the undead overrunning the vicinity; with this loss, in addition to the loss of Station 11 and the Getty Center FOB, Unit 14 decided to cut their losses and prepared their exodus of America with as many personnel and supplies they could get, intending to head to an overseas base in the Middle East to continue their operations. Having got what they needed, Roach thanks the soldier before pulling out his pistol and executing him.
As night fell and the weather began to change into a thunderstorm, the four load up a Unit 14 van with various supplies and chart a course for the Unit 14 dig site. With everything loaded up, the four depart the junkyard for Douglas City; cracking open a can of soda, Roach raises a toast to Mac and his allies for helping them break the cycle, promising to reunite with them once they end Unit 14's madness once and for all.
Excavation: Remembrance[]
As the sun once again crested over the horizon on a new morning, a Unit 14 van races down a well-traveled dirt road. Rapidly approaching the van in the distance in a large sawmill, its operations seemingly subsided. The van picks up speed, and rams through the sawmill's main checkpoint, running over a couple of zombies in the process. The back doors of the van are kicked open by TJ, who shoots a zombie dead as O'Ryan follows behind him. Chris pulls out his pistol and shoots a zombie through the van's windshield before he exits the vehicle with Roach. As the zombies in the area begin to converge onto their position, TJ tosses Chris a radio he secured from the van before O'Ryan remarks that they weren't messing around this time, to which Roach agrees with, saying that they do not want to waste any time on securing the area from the undead.
After clearing out the initial horde, Roach tells the group to split into two teams to search for the dig site's entrance; Chris and O'Ryan would sweep the right side, while he would handle the other with TJ. TJ tells Chris to keep his radio in check, asking to use it to give an update should they find it or not. Chris nods in agreement as he runs off with O'Ryan, though just before TJ could walk in his assigned direction, Roach puts his hand on his shoulder and stops him. Roach tells TJ that he's betting everything on finding this weapon, remarking that there was only one option left if they fail before glancing towards TJ's weapon. TJ is initially shocked by what Roach was referring to, but Roach continues, saying that it was their final option to ensure Unit 14 cannot continue the cycle, explaining that they need to avert the temporal paradox they've unwittingly created, no matter the cost. Looking down at his weapon, TJ solemnly nods in agreement; Roach pats his hand on TJ's shoulder, saying that they've got to move.
With both teams sweeping each end of the sawmill's exterior, Chris radios in, saying that they've found no indication of an exterior entrance to the dig site. TJ acknowledges, saying that he wasn't fairing any better with Roach either; Roach takes the radio from TJ, saying that they were now going to converge inside the sawmill, suggesting they move towards the center. The two teams then work their way inside the structure, fighting through the zombies in their way until the two teams reunite in an open area inside the building. Looking around, Chris spots a large metal hatch partially-concealed under a heap of sawdust and begins brushing it away; the others join in, and reveal the hatch completely. Roach and TJ work together to lift it open, revealing a spiraling shaft with a stone stairwell aligned on the side of it. Knowing it was what they were looking for, Roach orders the other two to enter first, telling TJ to help close the hatch behind them to ensure they aren't followed by the undead.
Just as the undead began to once again converge towards them, TJ and Roach are able to close the hatch, sealing themselves inside the dig site. While the undead vainly attempt to open the hatch, Roach takes out his flashlight and leads the group down the stairwell into the depths of the shaft. As they traverse down the steps, Roach shines his light on the various stone carvings found on the wall beside them, noting their unusual design while remarking he's never seen anything like it. Fearing they were entering a sacred place that was never meant for exploration, O'Ryan questions what they would do with the weapon when they get it. Roach explains that based on what the soldier they interrogated suggested, the weapon would require the use of the Summoning Key to access, theorizing that its powers must exceed the relic. To answer O'Ryan's question directly, he remarks that they would use the weapon to hunt down every last member of Unit 14, and purge the world of the undead.
Just as he finished, Roach trips and falls, but instead of falling down more steps, he finds himself on the ground. Roach picks himself up and shines his flashlight overhead, revealing a large symbol etched above a cave leading away from the shaft. Roach gestures for the others to be quiet, remarking that he doesn't want to hear anything from them before advancing down the cave, much to the amusement of the other three. At the end of the tunnel was a large stone door with several symbols carved into it; among the symbols was a circular slot the size of the Summoning Key, which was surrounded by four red symbols. Roach pulls out the Summoning Key and glances towards the others before placing the relic in the slot. The Summoning Key begins to flash, with every flash lighting up one of the four symbols; after the fourth symbol is lit up, the Summoning Key is ejected from the slot, which Roach catches. The stone door soon raises up into the ceiling, revealing a circular stone chamber; within the chamber was a metallic sword-like weapon suspended in air above a stone altar.
Roach cautiously approaches the weapon, and with his free hand he grabs it by the handle; as his flesh makes contact, an electric current shocks him, which causes him to stagger backwards and fall to his knees, clenching his head. As the others call for Roach, his hearing deafens and his vision goes black. Upon opening his eyes, Roach finds himself standing in an empty void, now holding the weapon and the Summoning Key. Roach questions where he was, and soon several shadowy silhouettes could be made out, all of which surrounded Roach. As he frantically looked around, a larger silhouette stepped forward, revealing himself in the lone light that shined down on Roach. Before Roach could question him on what was going on, the figure's voice echoed throughout the void, ordering Roach to repeat what he said. Suddenly, Roach found himself struggling to control himself as his eyes flickered between his normal eye color and a new gold one as he began uncontrollably repeating the figure's words.
"I... am a mortal. Weak, frail, subject to false truths. I have been victim to these truths given by the light; the power of a soul is one that should never be trusted. I, however, can be given a new purpose. I can be made stronger. I possess the Harbinger, and once it is imbued with the power of the Soul Stone, I can pawn my weak soul... in exchange for the powers of darkness. I will be... eternal. I. Will. Be. Soulless."
Roach once again opens his eyes, finding himself back in the Harbinger's chamber, now armed with the Harbinger while the others observed from behind. Looking down at an empty slot in the Harbinger's hilt as his eyes continued to flicker, Roach thrusts the Summoning Key into it, fusing the relic in place and causing it to lose any and all resemblance to its previous self as it turns into a grey cat-like eye; Roach eerily remarks that the Harbinger was complete as his eye color finally remains golden. As Roach begins to exhume a mist of darkness from his body, TJ nervously asks what was wrong. Before he could react, Roach turns around a fires a dark beam from the Harbinger towards TJ, striking him in the chest. A shocked TJ could only watch in horror as his soul emerges from his body, which is promptly sucked into the Harbinger, before collapsing onto the ground as his body begins to fade away.
O'Ryan rushes to TJ's aid, but is promptly blasted by Roach as well, and the process is repeated on him too. A horrified Chris attempts to pull his pistol on Roach, but Roach is quick to use the Harbinger to send out a gust of energy, which forces Chris to drop his pistol. Looking back towards Roach, Chris could only cower in fear as he is blasted by the Harbinger and subsequently rendered unconscious. As the other three's physical forms continued to fade out, Roach remarks that there was only one left before turning the Harbinger on himself. Activating the weapon, Roach extracts his soul from his body, where it joins with the other three within the Harbinger. Chuckling to himself in victory, Roach finally collapses to the ground as he too begins to fade away. After a moment, the four completely fade out, the Harbinger shortly following suit.
Opening his eyes, he finds himself standing in a dark world, now wearing a mysterious black coat as a mysterious blue aura around him fades. Waving his right hand beside him, he materializes the Harbinger in it. In front of him, the other three materialize, all of whom wore the same coat and possessed golden eyes. Grinning, he looks up to the empty sky and raises his weapon before declaring himself "Xarcoh".
