Futuristic Zombies Futuristic Warfare

Specialized Weapon Variants are weapons first introduced in Call of Duty: Resistance as specialized variants of weapons with unique attachments not found in regular weapons. They returned in Call of Duty: Awakening of the Hive, its sequel Call of Duty: Rise of the Hive, Call of Duty: Extinction and its sequels Call of Duty: Age of Extinction and Call of Duty: Retribution, and are featured in Call of Duty: Zombies, Futuristic Zombies, Prophecy, Boss Rush and Karneval der Albträume, with an upcoming appearance in Futuristic Warfare.

History[]

In their introduction, Specialized Weapon Variants were unable to be customized further and featured standard attachments with a few having combined attachments, such as armour-piercing and full metal jacket rounds, and had a different visual appearance than their standard counterparts; essentially, as their name suggested, they were special variants of weapons. In Call of Duty: Extinction introduced a new wave of SWVs that included Weapon Perks, which provided them an identity and a broad difference than regular weapons, and would enhance the weapon or provide effects to enhance the user, these were unlocked by getting kills with that SWV. They were also identified by rarity as well, such as Common, Uncommon, Rare, Epic, Legendary and Ancient. Call of Duty: Extinction also introduced Weapon Mods which would change the appearance of an SWV and add a new Weapon Perk, which didn't need to be unlocked. Call of Duty: Age of Extinction introduced Weapon Ornaments, which only changed an SWV's visual appearance and did not include a Weapon Perk.

In Call of Duty: Retribution, SWVs were classified as Second Generation and introduced the Masterwork system, a mechanic that would further improve an SWV's Weapon Perks, and were also now able to be customized with SWV Attachments and the process to unlocking Weapon Perks was improved. Some First Generation SWVs returned as "Reprisals" with Second Generation features, such as Masterworks and the new Attachments. However, Second Generation SWVs were limited to only having two of these new attachments equipped at a time. Karneval der Albträume introduced SWV Curated Variants, which featured a different appearance than their non-Curated versions and with a set of Attachments that complimented the weapons and were not limited to only two attachments.

Futuristic Zombies introduced the Techno Series, Synthwave Series and Atlas Series SWVs, of which SWVs introduced were part of either series; these remained as Second Generation. However, certain SWVs were considered to be Wonder Weapons and not part of a Series, and were classified as Third Generation, following new guidelines, such as Rarity-influenced Weapon Perk efficiency and power. Select Second Generation and First Generation SWVs returned as "Rebirth" versions.

  • Originally Tachibana Games was going to name the Specialized Weapon Variant class Super Weapon, however this was changed as the former name was a lot more favorable than Super Weapon as well as Specialized Weapon Variant meant that they were special variants of regular weapons they were based on and not super weapons.
  • Some Specialized Weapon Variants are not based on regular weapons, such as the R-Mark I which is an experimental railgun developed by the 501st Corporation before the Awakening of the Hive.
