Yeah, I know we're not out of the main year of support for this game, but we're getting close-ish. Just thought I'd take a look back at the game over the past almost year. With that said, here we go.
Campaign[]
The campaign was a solid story, in my opinion, despite the troubled production behind the scenes. I liked multiple endings, I liked the twist with Bell, as well as the cast of characters. Returning characters like Mason, Woods, and Hudson are nice, but the new characters like Adler, Park, Sims, and Lazar were good. My favorite mission in the campaign has now become one of my favorite missions in the franchise, that being Desperate Measures. Not a bad first go from Raven Software. My only gripe was when they were promoting the game with PawnTakesPawn and the end result came to the son of Bowman from the first Black Ops. What ever happened with that? Why didn't he show up? Either way, I thought it was solid.
Multiplayer[]
Imma be honest. I hardly touched multiplayer. When I did, it was because I found it easier to do weapon unlock challenges in there than zombies. So, with that said I'm probably not gonna have much to say here. I'm glad they brought Gunfight back from Modern Warfare. I loved that mode when I had a friend playing with. Maps were interesting. Loath Fireteam: Dirty Bomb. I actually suffered trying to unlock Garcia's default skin. That said, I somewhat enjoyed Fireteam: Elimination. Was great for the fans of Blackout that can't stand Warzone. Even though Warzone has grown on me tremendously. Speaking of which...
Warzone[]
I'm not covering all of Warzone since it was brought into Modern Warfare. Only since it's integration with Black Ops Cold War. When it was first announced that they would add another map (Rebirth Island) and make it essentially Blackout's Alcatraz, I was stoked. Back in Black Ops 4's days Alcatraz was the only thing I played outside of zombies. So, yeah. Stoked. Fun fact about me, I love the idea behind Battle Royale games, but hate playing because I suck. And I feel that's because I like to rush into action. I don't think out my attacks. I just attack. But in Rebirth, you don't have time to plan an attack because your enemy is right around the corner at every given second. And when I can rush in, I can get work done. Seasonal events are fun too. Not to mention I loved The Destruction of Verdansk. Part One, not so much Part Two. I have also been enjoying some of the LTMs they add. Especially Payload. Over all, I like year two of Warzone.
Zombies[]
I didn't think Treyarch could do zombies better after Black Ops III. After Black Ops 4, I thought I was right. But, I guess I'm wrong. Black Ops Cold War zombies is where Treyarch peeked... at least in gameplay. Story is hot garbage. But we'll get to that. Let's talk positives first. Like I said, it's peeked. You can't do better. At first I thought that the idea of starting with any weapon was dumb. You can start with something over powered like an LMG? Kinda defeats the point of zombies. Then they introduced the weapon rarity tiers. I thought this was a good balance for it. The salvage/crafting system is also great. Armor replacing the zombie shield was a necessary change, I think. Scorestreaks are good to have. Maps are decent, despite there being so few maps. Outbreak is actually growing on me. I just wish it wasn't their main focus. Onslaught is a good time killer when you just wanna sit back and slay some zombies. It's PlayStation exclusive got a lot of flaws, but it's alright. But like I said earlier, story sucks. It's so bland and I don't care about any of the little amount of characters that are a part of the story (except Raptor-1, he's the homie). If they had made an actual cast of characters that you play as like previous titles, it might work. Like, I'd love it if Samantha was a playable character in her own cast of characters. But nah, it's generic multiplayer operators. The operators would be fine in Onslaught and Outbreak, but not the regular maps. Overall, great mechanics, shit story.
Conclusion[]
TL;DR, Black Ops Cold War was alright.
