Zea Mays is a stereotypical Southern-American farmer and the first of the four survivors to encounter zombies. Zea Mays has very low intelligence, often making quotes from famous Americans (that are horribly inaccurate). Because of his very low intelligence, he is able to hear the Demonic Announcer. Zea's favourite weapon is the Olympia.

Zea Mays grew up in a poor family with very few friends. Working on a farm for his entire life, with the exception of one year while he went to Grade 8, Zea is a strong, fit man, with a very low IQ level. Zea, when viewed by others, is a crazy idiot with locked potential.

Saigo no Fukkatsu[]
Throughout Saigo no Fukkatsu, Zea is shown to be semi-under control by the Demonic Announcer. During the map's major easter egg, Zea is taken under control by the announcer, and attempts to murder the group of survivors. After revealing to the group that Yuudai Endo was a part of Group 935, Yuudai is killed, and Zea (managing to regain control) attempts to travel with the survivors, gaining intelligence as he goes. According to the unnamed soldier, Zea was cursed after touching the meteor infused with Ununpentium (Element 115) and started to transform into "one of them".
However, if Zea is killed by the survivors, the Demonic Announcer uses him to communicate with the survivors, and commands a group of Zombies to attack the group non-stop. This ending is categorised as "non-canon" (as it is difficult to kill Zea, as he has 3x the normal health and is not attacked by zombies).

- Zea is one of the two playable characters who actually hear the Demonic Announcer, the other being Samuel Stuhlinger.
- In one of his quotes, he states that his IQ level is literally -5.
- He also mentions that, when he was born, he was a "ceral-ible guinea pig" (certifiable genius).
- Zea Mays is the scientific name for corn/maize.
- It is also based on the television advertisement star Billy Mays.
- Zea states that his grandfather was Orville Redenbacher, the creator of Kernels Popcorn.
